WHAT PRESCRIPTION READING GLASSES DO I NEED?

by qinggongguo 18 Nov 2024

When selecting prescription reading glasses, several factors should be considered:

Assess Your Vision Needs: Initially, it is imperative to undergo an examination by an eye care professional to ascertain your vision requirements. This assessment includes determining your sphere (SPH), and if astigmatism is present, it will also involve measuring the cylindrical degree (CYL) and axis (Axis). Should you require bifocal or progressive lenses, additional power (Add) must also be assessed.

Choose the Type of Lenses: Depending on your vision needs, you may opt for single vision lenses, bifocal lenses, trifocal lenses, or progressive lenses. Single vision lenses are suitable for correcting only near vision; bifocal lenses cater to those requiring correction for both distance and near vision; while progressive lenses offer a seamless transition from distance to near, ideal for individuals requiring continuous vision.

Lens Shape and Size: Select an appropriately sized lens based on your prescription and vision requirements. Smaller lenses are fitting for lower prescriptions, whereas larger lens shapes are more suitable for higher prescriptions or multifocal needs.

Frame Material: Metal frames tend to be more durable than plastic frames. Plastic frames come in various colors, styles, and price points, whereas metal, titanium, or alloy frames offer greater resistance to wear. Titanium is the lightest and most flexible material for metal frames.

Lens Material: If you frequently find yourself outdoors or require impact-resistant lenses, polycarbonate offers a safe and lightweight option. Trivex is another impact-resistant lens material that is lighter than polycarbonate and may exhibit less distortion.

Protective Coatings: The application of protective coatings on lenses can prolong their lifespan, including scratch-resistant, anti-reflective, and ultraviolet (UV) protection coatings.

Pupillary Distance (PD): This refers to the distance between the centers of your pupils, measured in millimeters. Accurate measurement ensures that the lenses align properly with your eyes for optimal vision correction.

Bear in mind, if you have astigmatism or other specific vision concerns, customized prescription reading glasses may be necessary. If you remain uncertain about your vision needs, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional or optometrist, who can provide you with expert guidance and a precise prescription.
